Herculaneum (Ercolano)
19th June 2008

Having done the Pompei thing and refreshed ourselves, we head for Herculaneum a few miles away. Said to be more compact and complete than Pompei, the residents of Herculaneum suffered the same fate as the neighbouring town when Mount Vesuvious errupted.

Aaaarrrh! Tourists are following us.

Once in town we find this mountain has already errupted onto the streets. The local dustmen have been on strike since January.

A De Haan Hotel
It seems that the locals take a er, relaxed view to road safety.

The streets are more intact than Pompei and less busy. An all round more pleasing experience.

Many of the buildings have received a 'rebuild'.

Some things are authentic.

The top of the image shows the current town of Herculaneum, in the far distance is the mountain that brought so much death to the area. Most of the residents of the day sought sanctuary at the bottom of the picture next to the water. This is where most bodies were found.

And so we leave Ercolano and the armed Policeman always on guard on this platform for our grumpy hoteliers in Pompei for one more night.
